Let’s look back at 2020 and recap what went well, what was hard and how the IT outsourcing industry has changed.

Year of the Pandemic and Home Office

We started the new year as usual. After long winter holidays we felt rested and hungry for new challenges. In the first quarter of 2020, we successfully filled 76 projects.

In early March, however, a crisis was the air. Our clients started to be more cautious. Once the planned coding conferences (PyCon and CodeCon) had been cancelled, we were sure that this would be an extraordinary year.

The end of March and anti-epidemic measures eventually forced many of us to home offices.

Confronting the Crisis

With the lockdown, the cooperation between clients and freelancers had to change. Companies that preferred on-site allocations needed a quick move to a “working from home” regime.

The situation was both a challenge and a lesson. Companies unprepared for off-site allocations were looking for the necessary hardware and software to set up all the infrastructure and security processes as soon as possible.

Most of our clients managed this transition without any problem. Those with unexpected setbacks could rely on us and we tried to help them as much as possible. We were continuously helping our IT freelancers to adapt to the new situation. Interviews, contracting and onboarding took place exclusively on a remote basis. We even sent them hardware by courier if necessary.

The special working regime lasted more or less the whole year. Restrictions alternated with relaxed measures and home office with on-site work.

We Filled the Highest Number of IT Positions in Our History

2020 was a difficult year. There is no doubt about that. However, in terms of the number of allocations, it was the most successful year in our history. We successfully filled 263 IT positions and improved on 2019 by 25%

The numbers show that 2020 was the year of home office. As a result, many of our clients realised that it is possible to cooperate with IT freelancers fully and even more effectively on a remote basis (off-site).

The number of off-site allocations thus increased by almost 50%. Out of the total of 263 allocated positions, 76 were off-site only and 137 were a combination of on-site and off-site.

Duration of Projects

Last year, our freelancers spent an average of 7.4 months on their projects. Compared to 2019, there was a slight decrease. This change was due to the pandemic crisis and the associated uncertainty.

During the first wave of Covid-19, the situation was unclear and no one really knew what to expect. In times like these our clients rely on flexibility. They prefer shorter allocations to be better able to respond to new changes and insecurity. 

However, we have seen an increase in the average duration of projects in the long term. We perceive that our freelancers work as fully-fledged members of client teams. This applies to normal as well as pandemic times.

Category of Projects

JAVA dominated as the most sought position in 2020. We allocated 44 fully-armed Java Programmers to projects. JavaScript Developers (30 projects) and Project Managers (22 projects) cut most of the remaining pie.

In 2020, there was higher demand for DevOps Specialists (15 projects). The allocations tripled compared to 2019 and 2018. IT companies clearly seek to increase agility and automation in their business and we expect this trend to continue.

Virtual Celebrations & Distance Education

The challenging 2020 is over. We have not only survived, but managed to grow. It was possible thanks to every single member of our internal team. Our internal TITANS worked hard in the office as well as at home. We appreciate their professionalism and commitment to day-to-day work challenges.

Even though we all wished to celebrate our success together and meet more often, it was impossible in 2020. We celebrated the arrival of our two newcomers and our seventh birthday virtually.

But there was an activity we enjoyed doing remotely in 2020. In June, we launched our first online workshop for secondary school students called “Score with your CV“.

The workshop was designed by our recruitment team to teach students how to describe their life’s achievements in a CV in an attractive way. As this activity has received a lot of positive feedback, we will definitely keep doing it.

Demand for IT Freelancers Is on the Rise

Year after year,  companies are increasingly interested in IT outsourcing.

Instead of building large IT departments, they look for high-quality freelancers to supplement missing capacities in their IT teams. There is a growing interest in hiring specialists dynamically when needed and releasing them once the project is done.
